Essay on Rationality in Homer’s Odyssey -- Homer Odyssey Essays

The Importance of Rationality in Homer’s Odyssey In the epic poem, Odyssey, Homer provides examples of the consequences of impulsive and irrational thinking, and the rewards of planning and rationality. Impulsive actions prove to be very harmful to Odysseus. His decisions when he is escaping the cave of the Cyclops lead to almost all his troubles through his journey. As Odysseus flees the cave, he yells back "Cyclops - if any man on the face of the earth should ask you who blinded you, shamed you so - say Odysseus, raider of cities, he gouged out you eye." This enrages the giant, and he prays to Poseidon "grant that Odysseus, raider of cities, Laertes' son who makes his home in Ithaca, never reaches home. Or if he's fated to see his people once again, let him come home late and come a broken man - all shipmates lost, alone in a stranger's ship - and let him find a world of pain at home!" In the end, all these things the Cyclops asks come to pass. Odysseus also makes the mistake of ignoring Circe's command. Circe had said to forgo putting on fighting gear, or the monster Scylla will cause his crew harm. "But now I cleared my mind of Circe's orders - cramping my style, urging me not to arm at all. I donned my heroic armor, seized long spears in both my hands and marched out on the half-deck." Because he ignores those orders given by Circe, the six headed monster Scylla snatches six of the crewmembers and eats them alive. The impulses of Odysseus' crewmembers also impede his journey. The ship had reached the Aeolian Island, home of Aeolus the master of all winds. He gave Odysseus a bag "binding inside the winds that how from every quarter, with the power to calm them down or rouse them as he pleased... ...cates stories of his journeys for them. He even fools his son, Telemachus, for a time, all to ensure that his plans are not compromised. Eventually he reveals himself to his son, saying, "No other Odysseus will ever return to you." Odysseus carries out his plans carefully and methodically. He even has the gall to speak to his own wife, never telling her of the truth. He plans the suitors' deaths, first to surprise them when he strings his own bow, much to the surprise of the suitors. Odysseus quickly and brutally kills the suitors with help from Athena and Telemachus. He covers up the slaughter inside his house by dancing and singing, and people who walked by outside thought "A miracle - someone's married the queen at last!" It is easily seen that throughout Homer’s Odyssey, rationality and crafty thinking prevails over impulse and irrationality.

The first being Negotiating with learners, when we first meet with a learner we conduct an Minimal assessment and a on line test for functional skills, this allows us to check on previous learning and any under planning knowledge they already have, thus allowing us to make sure the learning will be set at the right level for that particular learner.When we are sure we know this we can discuss with the learner what targets we are going to set them, this would Include goals and actions we want them to reach, we want the learner to achieve so would make the targets SMART so they are achievable to the leaner, in turn this would help to keep the learner motivated in the learning environment. Having started with the internet I looked at various sites detailing the reasoning and methods of negotiating with learners in respect of initial assessments and agreeing goals and actions.During my research I foun d a site detailing how negotiating with learners has changed over time in regards to higher education. Through the media, America and the American Dream is depicted as the salvation for poverty, sorrow, and hardship. The Founding Fathers invented the American Dream, offering life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Through the lecture of week 2, I understood the definition of post modernity. It is defined that ‘Post modernity is a reaction to the advanced alienation of late capitalism tempt to restore some meaning to the existential despair over the growing irrationality of modernity’ (Lee, 1992). In addition, I also learned that post modernity has many characteristics which consists of hyper reality, chronology, fragmentation, dedifferentiation, pastiche, anti-foundationalism, reversals of production and consumption, decentering of subject and paradoxical juxtapositions. Demographic data further reveals prevalence of unhealthy lifestyles and lack of awareness in regards to health related factors amongst them, which causes higher incidence of various diseases. Diseases amongst Maori starts with birth related complexities and then progresses to adult age, when they go undiagnosed. Unhealthy diet amongst Maori po pulation, high levels of smoking, absence of knowledge regarding health are pertinent factors affecting comorbidities amongst Maori population. It has been observed that Maori women are at greater risks from breast cancer compared to women from other ethnicities(Health(2002) Retrieved on 16th March 2018). Women within the population rarely test for breast cancer and majority of cases goes undiagnosed, which leads to impact on mortality rates from the diseases. Apart from screening of various diseases, there is absence of awareness of the various health related factors. This creates a gap in health care service delivery amongst Maori and other segment of the population. As per government disclosed figures cancer registration in 2009 had 20,875 cases in which 46.6% were female. Amongst all deaths cancer accounted for 28.9% amounting to 8437 people. After prostrate cancer being the most common type of cancer was breast cancer amongst women. There were increasing trend by 22.8% in 2009. Total of 1888 Maori women were registered with 415.2 per 100,000 people compared to 337.9. However, cancer registration rate fell by 1.3% in the period 1999 and 2009 but risen later again. Poverty factor being associated with health reflect worse health conditions compared to those who have better education, income or occupational levels. Structural factors have led to generation of inequalities as Maori women experiences poor living and working conditions compared to other segments of the population. Determinants of health if tackled can lead to developments within the population as lifestyle factors, social and community influences, working and living conditions, culture, ethnicity and gender along with general socioeconomic with environmental conditions. Health interventions varies across different geographic locations in New Zealand, therefore they are at greater risks of health. Inequality in distribution of materials and resources create differential access to healthcare facilities generating impact on health care status and mortality rates. Conclusion Actions taken to reduce socioeconomic factors can greatly enhances chances of health care within the population. The Treaty of Waitangi has been developed to increase health conditions of the Pacific Islander people.
